Love What You Do
“Love What You Do” – a sign with a white background and fun, colorful letters hanging on my office wall. My former mentor, colleague, office-mate and friend left it behind as she changed her course in loving what she does. Perhaps, a reminder for me in either continuing on in my current career that has become a significant part of my life and helping shape how I view the world or in pushing me to pursue something even greater. I see the sign everyday (at least Monday through Friday) when I walk in my office, most times consciously. It’s amazing how we get used to something and then forget it’s even there. But recently, there has been an unconsciousness hovering around me, reminding me at various moments in my day to Love What You Do. I see it in the words of others. “I love my job!” - a status update on Facebook. Watching a gray-haired couple walking by, talking and smiling at each other while holding hands. A dad coaching his son’s football team with excitement and pride reflected in each other’s eyes. Random words on the radio, in an e-mail, in the voice of a daughter talking about animals. ”Love What You Do” – a simple, yet multidimensional concept that can be related to one, two or every aspect of your life. When you love what you do, you don’t need an alarm clock to wake you up in the morning. You don’t care what hours or days you have to work because “work” is only an adjective used to describe the good-feeling-place where you spend your day. Loving What You Do makes you smile, be kind to others, have a do-your-best attitude – in every aspect of your life - at work, at home, with your spouse, your kids, your family, your team. When you Love What You Do, you feel better which makes the people around you feel better which radiates out and touches people you don’t even know. So take a moment to sit back and think about where you are and ask yourself Do You Love What You Do? I think a small percentage would say Yes. But if you’re like many of us, the answer is No. And that’s okay. Because at this very moment, we can choose to turn things around. We can only start where we are at. There is always something, no matter how small, that we can find to Love in the midst of Not Loving. And if we put our focus on that small thing, another small Love will appear. And if we continue to focus, we will find ourselves finding more things to Love on our way to Loving What We Do. And eventually, you will feel better and then the world will be better because more of us Love What We Do. So take the only moment you have, which is NOW, and start toLove What You Do. It may lead you to a whole new place or open up the place you are at. Either way it doesn’t matter! Let me know how it goes!!!
